Why Wood Still Moves Even When It's Warm and Dry Inside Your Home

You keep your house comfortable. The thermostat holds steady, the air feels dry in winter and a little heavier in summer, and yet somehow that hardwood floor still has a gap between the boards that wasn't there in July. Or maybe it's a cabinet door that used to close with a soft click and now needs a little shove. If you've ever wondered whether something is wrong with your wood, the answer is almost always no. Wood is simply doing what wood does.

Wood Never Really Stops "Breathing"


Even after a tree becomes a floor plank or a dresser drawer, the material stays alive in one important sense. It keeps absorbing and releasing moisture from the air around it, constantly adjusting to match its surroundings. This quality is called being hygroscopic, and it never fully switches off, no matter how old the piece of furniture is or how many coats of finish it wears.


That means the wood in your living room is in a quiet, ongoing conversation with the air. When the air holds more moisture, the wood pulls some of it in and swells slightly. When the air dries out, the wood releases moisture and shrinks back down. So Why Does This Happen Indoors Too?


Here's the part that trips people up. Your HVAC system is excellent at controlling temperature, but temperature and humidity are two very different things. Turning on the heat in winter doesn't add any moisture to the air, it just warms up already-dry air, which actually lowers the relative humidity even further. That's why floors and trim often shrink the most in the dead of winter, right when the furnace is running hardest.


Summer works the opposite way. Warmer outdoor air tends to hold more moisture, and even with air conditioning running, some of that humidity finds its way inside. The wood senses it and expands a touch, which is why doors and drawers can feel snugger in July than they do in January.


The Spots Where You'll Notice It Most


A few areas in the home tend to show this movement more than others.


Hardwood floors are the classic example, since a slight seasonal gap between boards is completely normal and not a sign of poor installation.


Cabinet doors and drawers can start rubbing or sticking as humidity shifts, especially in kitchens where cooking adds extra moisture to the air.


Solid wood furniture, particularly wide tabletops, can develop tiny cracks over time if it was built without allowing room for natural movement.


Trim and millwork near heating vents or fireplaces are especially prone to drying out and pulling apart at the seams.


None of this means your wood is defective or that your contractor made a mistake. It's simply the material responding to its environment the way it always has, long before central heating existed.


What You Can Actually Do About It

You can't stop wood from moving, but you can make peace with it. Keeping indoor relative humidity somewhere in the 40 to 60 percent range throughout the year goes a long way toward minimizing dramatic swings. A simple hygrometer, the kind that also tracks temperature, makes it easy to keep an eye on things without much effort. Using a humidifier in the driest winter months and running the AC or a dehumidifier in the muggiest summer stretches helps smooth out the extremes your wood has to deal with.


If you're planning new flooring, cabinetry, or furniture, ask your designer or contractor whether the wood has been acclimated to your home before installation. Letting boards sit in the actual room for several days before they go in makes a real difference in how well they settle afterward.
